Whip It Up Wednesday: Shoney’s Hot Fudge Cake

Anyone else have a TON of childhood memories full of Shoney’s nights and their hot fudge cake?  Not to mention that amazing salad bar that I used to crave and eat weekly.  I remember my mom telling me that as a toddler I would ask to go get Shoney’s slaw and salad.  Why the slaw was so special, I don’t really know but she said it was something I begged for often.  We spent many nights, especially after church at Shoney’s with friends and family.  And how can one have ever gone to Shoney’s and not fallen in love with their famous hot fudge cake!  My mom said this was what she craved when pregnant with me, so maybe that’s why I grew to love it so much.  I had always wanted to try making it and I finally gave it a go recently.

There was really nothing to it!  If you can follow directions on the back of a boxed cake mix, you can definitely make this cake.  This would be such a fun recipe for kids to help make with you or even all by themselves, depending on age.

Ingredients:

Boxed Devil’s Food Cake

Vanilla Ice Cream (in a cardboard box)

Hot Fudge Topping

Reddi-Wip/Cool Whip

Cherries

All you do is bake a boxed devils food cake in a 13x9in pan.  Follow directions on the box.  After baking and letting it cool, invert on a piece of wax paper.  Using a long knife, cut the cake in half horizontally.  I then sliced the top half in thirds, in fear that if I tried to pick up the whole top layer, it may break/crumble due to being so moist.   Cutting in thirds made it easier to move.

Keeping the cake on the wax paper (I trimmed it up with scissors a bit to fit better.), place the bottom layer back in pan.  You then open your cardboard box of vanilla ice cream on all sides and slice.  Layer ice cream on bottom layer of cake.

Place the remaining layer of cake on top of ice cream and cover in plastic wrap.  Put back in freezer until time to serve.

When ready to serve, warm your hot fudge.  I bought the glass jar so I could just do this in the microwave quickly.   Add your hot fudge, cool whip and cherries to your hearts desire and enjoy!

It was soooo good and JUST as I had remembered.  We all loved it!  I think this is a perfect treat for summer.  Cake, ice cream and hot fudge is hard to beat!  This would be a great dessert if you are having friends or family over and doing some entertaining.  Let me know if you try it and what you think.  Enjoy the little things soon like Shoney’s Hot Fudge Cake.  YUM!
